How to Cure the Fascist

How to Cure the Fascist: Neoliberalism and Identity Obsessions
Franco “Bifo” Berardi

What if fascism is not something we can defeat? What if it is something we carry within us?

In How to Cure the Fascist, Franco “Bifo” Berardi overturns the familiar language of anti-fascism to propose a far more unsettling diagnosis. Fascism, he argues, is not an external enemy to be fought and destroyed, but a pathology of the social mind, born from fear, humiliation, and the collapse of meaning in an accelerating world. Moving between philosophy, media theory, and personal reflections, Berardi traces the emergence of a new kind of fascism: one shaped by digital networks, semiocapitalism, and the fragmentation of identity. In a landscape where communication is saturated, attention exhausted, and desire manipulated, aggression replaces solidarity, and paranoia becomes political common sense.

Against the rituals of denunciation and the failures of militant opposition, Berardi proposes another path: not resistance as confrontation, but transformation as therapy. To cure fascism requires rethinking how we feel, how we speak, how we relate, slowing down the rhythms of panic, dissolving rigid identities, and rediscovering the fragile possibilities of tenderness, pleasure, and collective care. Written in the aftermath of the Cold War but uncannily attuned to the present, How to Cure the Fascist is both a diagnosis of our darkest tendencies and a speculative guide to escaping them.

Not a manifesto, not a program, but a provocation: the revolution begins in the psyche.

Bio: Franco “Bifo” Berardi is an Italian writer, media theorist, and activist whose work has been central to the development of post-autonomist thought. Emerging from the radical movements of 1970s Italy, he was a founding figure of the free radio project Radio Alice and has since written extensively on semiocapitalism, digital culture, and the transformations of labor, subjectivity, and desire. His work moves between political theory, philosophy, and cultural analysis, consistently foregrounding the psychic and affective dimensions of contemporary life. Minor Compositions previously published his widely influential Precarious Rhapsody, a key text exploring cognitive labor and the precarious conditions of networked capitalism.
